catalogue credit destroyer

Here's a credit account scam that I learned about today by accident.
but it is one that we  all need to watch out for because once done, I have found that the same companies that pull this scam have no way to communicate with them in order to be able to reverse it!.

It seems ot be a pretty wide spread "free calogue"  scam; The worst offender to date? Fingerhut .com

Here is how it works. You see that flashy "free catalogues" come on online. I clicked on it because I am decorating a new apartment. I chose a few includng Fingerhut, a company I had heard of but never dealt with before. Whoopie, I get a free cataglogue from Fingerhut.. Surprisingly, it says in bright red on the cover: My first personal name and then $350 PREAPPROVED CREDIT!

I had never asked for credit nor did the catalogue hustle never mention credit. Well, I am planning to buy a house soon and so I orderd my credit report and sat down with a highlighter to check out my score and credit history.

I was HORRIFIED to see a list of from whom I had received free catalogues as those asking for approval for credit. At least five of them! Not great for my credit report because as I learned while working for Old Navy, every credit card or preapproved credit request is a black mark on ones credit report.

Well, one reputable company I called said they would remove my name immediately. Does that mean it gets off my credit report? Not without a struggle.

But Fingerhut --disreputable miserable Fingerhut has no way -- absolutely no way -- to get the same relief. I've spent the entire afternoon calling every number I could find and struggling through their dead end extensions until I was ready to tear the  phone out of the wall. Nada. Nothing. No way to shut off their blood letting credit disrepair.

I suspect that as I go down the list tomorrow, I may run into other comanies as disreputable as Fingerhut. I guess when they overcharge, as Fingerhut seems to do, they need to have a credit hustle going. But help. How can I get these dead end "customer service" non service companies that have requested credit in my name, solely on the basis that I signed up for a free catalogue, off my credit record?  My advice: DO NOT REQUEST FREE CATALOGUES. i AM HORRIFIED AT THIS PLOY. I wouldn''t buy from Fingerhut if they offered 70 % markoffs. Mts.JM B
